Coach players to be conscious of using all the ice that is available for this purpose. For example, the winger farthest away from the puck carrier can try to find open ice on that wing near the boards. This play often puts players skating away from the puck and not toward the puck, which opens up more space. This allows your team to utilize the entire width of the ice surface to make offensive plays and forces the opposition to cover more area. This practice is known as creating width to offensive play.

Players without the puck can also make use of the length of the ice surface. Such players can skate up ice, away from the puck carrier to create options, as long as they recognize the limitations of offside passes (refer to Chapter 2 for more about offside infractions). This practice is known as creating depth to an attack. See Figure 10-2 for examples of players without the puck creating width and depth to offensive options.
